BACKGROUND/MOTIVATION

In 2015, the RCD hosted a Panel Forum to explore the notion of “Relationship and Disability”; we then realized how powerful and poignant this topic is. Basically it is hitting very close to home. This year we want to carry the theme further to involve inputs from participants, and this becomes the key cornerstone of this event.

Sometimes Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses are invisible!

Loosely defined, an invisible disability is a disability that is not immediately noticeable. They can include brain injuries, chronic pain, mental illness, gastro-intestinal disorders, and much more. Because they are not obvious to spot, invisible disabilities/illnesses may be overlooked and misunderstood. And unfortunately, this can lead to discrimination or exclusion of those with an invisible condition.

Why an Awareness Forum?
  • A person with an invisible disability/illness may find it difficult to talk about their condition and the daily challenges they face.
  • The “hidden” quality of invisible disabilities/illnesses means there is an increased need for creating awareness and changing attitudes.
  • A safe, nonjudgmental and collaborative discussion session that start simply with conversations to help educate and encourage understanding.
  • Learn from experts and counselors of real life experience, insightful options and relevant community resources.

It is important to change the way we talk and think about invisible disabilities. Open communication and open minds are key.
