The Centre
The establishment of the Centre took more than 8 years of research and planning and is an excellent example of the RCD's
commitment to work in partnership with community organizations and members of the community.
The need for specialized centralized information & resources in this area for people with disabilities was first identified by the RCD in the late 1980's. The RCD has developed the Centre in a manner which will avoid duplication of already existing services in the
region, rather it will build upon them. Working in partnership with people with disabilities & community organizations, the RCD will
ensure the "vision" of Independent Living is the guiding factor in all decision-making. Currently, the DRC has 7 staff members working at the Centre headed by the Executive Director, Ella Huang. The Centre is also supported by the invaluable assistance of volunteers in Reception, Computer Training Programs and the summer activities programs for children.

Awards We Have Won
Until recently, the RCD's accomplishments were achieved through the work done by its volunteer members, although some City
staff resources were used when a project was being undertaken in partnership with the City. Over the past 10 years, several of the
RCD volunteers have been recognized for their service to the community (not just to people with disabilities in the community). The
list is by no means complete, but some examples include:
- B.C. Recreation Association award for volunteerism.
- City of Richmond for volunteerism.
- Governor General of Canada award (3 RCD members received this at that time).
- 1993 Richmond Citizen of the Year.
- 1995 B.C.Paraplegic Association Merit Award.
- 1997 Ethel Tibbets Award Woman of the Year for community service.
- Paul Harris Fellow Award, presented by the Richmond Sunrise Rotary for community service.
- 2000 B.C.Paraplegic Association Merit Award.
- Year 2000 Chamber Member of the Year award (jointly presented by the City of Richmond & Richmond Chamber of Commerce).
