RCD did it again – it was a fabulous event held at the River Rock Casino Resort on Oct. 20, 2012. Over 200 guests gathered at the River Rock’s Whistler Ballroom, totally mesmerized by Darren Lee – world renowned Elvis Tribute Artist and his band the Memphis Flash’s performance.
The event started promptly at 7:15 p.m. with Vince Miele, Chair of RCD Board of Director giving the Welcome Remark, then we also had Mayor Malcolm Brodie greeting the guests and encouraging everyone to support the RCD’s fundraising initiative of the night: 50-50 Draw. The buffet dinner was absolutely enjoyed and praised by all the guests – a truly Las Vegas style buffet.
At 8:15 p.m. the performance began and it was 75 minutes of non-stop excitement and reminiscent of the golden times of Elvis with all his songs. The climax erupted when Darren jumped on the head table and held the hand of Frances Clark, RCD founder and Board Secretary; the moment was electrifying.
Later in the night, Darren Lee and the band returned to play more music for the guests to dance, to which many guests took the opportunity and showed off their spectacular dancing skills. Everybody had great fun and the party went on until 11 p.m. Most people left the Gala with Elvis’ songs still ringing in their heads.
The RCD thanks all the sponsors, donors, supporters and guests making the event so successful! Great thank you to River Rock Banquet Team for enabling the event go on flawlessly! More thank you to Darren Lee and his band for bringing the hype to the Gala! Thank you! We can’t wait for next year’s event, and we’ll book you for now!
Enjoy the gala photos, thank you to Volunteer Photographer Andrew Annuar and our very own Rich Green for helping to keep the great moments of the Gala on photos!

On August 2, Viet and Kathie joined the Summer WHAM event. Over 20 agencies/organizations participated this great fair. Many seniors came and greeted to each other, not only to collect information but to learn some new knowledge . The Alzheimer Society of BC gave a very good presentation about brain health. Many visitors came to RCD table . RCD also dispatched the flyers of the Invisible Illness Awareness Week for the participants. The flyers got very good feedback.
It’s really an informative event for the Chinese seniors to get in touch with the community services. RCD participated the event and met many lovely seniors. Ella and Kathie answered the enquiries that they concerned, such as: parking permit, senior housing, and caregivers etc. How wonderful to meet seniors in such great fair.

Although it was a gloomy morning on June 29, RCD members really had great time exploring the Ships to Shore event at Steveston.  Dave, the public education coordinator of the RCD, was a navy man before and he explained the history of each ship to us.  All members were able to board and view the sailing vessels.  The crew from all of the ships showed greatest hospitality and loved sharing stories with the crowd.  It’s a fabulous event and I feel it should be brought back next year.  We appreciate the invitation from the City of Richmond and all of the hard work for the event.

The RCD Youth Group was a success despite of rain. We set up the tent and BBQ at the front door of RCD and grilled hot dogs. About 12 people came to the party. We had salad, chips, cookies and soft drinks at first. Everyone got to eat 2-3 hot dogs and chat with other members and RCD staff in the activity room. Then we started the first game: musical chairs. 7 people joined in the game and Gary Wong was the final winner. The 2nd game was Wii Mario & Sonic Olympic. Everyone had a chance to play at least one game, like bobsleigh. The most important part of the Olympic game was that 4 people had to be in one team and worked together to reach the goal and get the championship. It was a very good opportunity for the members to work with one another and build up the team spirit. Meanwhile, those who were not playing the game were having some in-depth conversations with Ella Huang about topics like the social issues in downtown East side. The party ended with the cleaning crew: Spencer Lee and Gary Wong vacuuming the whole room, Tony helping out with all dishes and Shelton & Kevin Liu taking care of the Wii machines. Also, the Youth Council invited all members to join the Sports Combo events in summer. It was overall a great party and we sincerely hope to see more members participate next time :)

RCD joined a fun event at King George Park on June 9, 2012. The day started quite grim, but when the sun came out the whole place was brightened up in time for the Opening Ceremony at 10 a.m.
Many dignitaries were at the Opening Ceremony, including Richmond Steveston MLA Mr. John Yap, Mayor of Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie and City Councillor Mr. Bill MuNulty, School Trustees as well as many representatives from different multi-cultural organizations. It was the first time RCD was at the event, in company of close to 20 social service agencies. It was truly a wonderful event for families and community.

Thank you to TransLink’s Access Transit Program and Coast Mountain Bus Company in bringing two very informative workshops to the RCD Life Skills Class.
On May 25, Sarah, Community Relations Coordinator of Access Transit Program gave a presentation on the bus system; the presentation was very information and everyone learned a lot of things or something new.
On June 8, Andrea and Nick, Training Instructors of Coast Mountain Bus Company, brought a 40ft bus to give a whole package tour to the Life Skills Class participants. We learned how to load a bicycle, all the safety concerns, accessible ramp and kneeling bus, how to insert bus transfer ticket, all information feature in a bus, the priority seating, as well as how to ring the bell and open the exit door. It was truly a treat for everyone and delightful to learn so much about taking a bus.
Some quotes from participants:
“It’s fun and informative.”
“I learn how to take the bus safely.”
“Trainers are very nice and knowledgeable.”
“I want to sit on the drivers’ seat.”
Kathie, Ella, Dave and Tom were at the City of Richmond’s Public Works Open House on Sat. Jun 2 manning the RCD info booth. The annual event was spectacular and well attended, 1000s of people visited the site, enjoying the games, entertainment, vintage car show’; learned about the city’s services, emergency troops, community agencies and more. There were so many gifts to collect, city gave away composts; different businesses gave out gimmicks like water bottles, caps, stickers; some offered games, arts projects, hands-on activities. The most impressive parts were the city vehicle show; you could even get into driver seat of all sorts of utility vehicles. Many children had so much fun and parents were happy that they did. It was the first time RCD was represented at the event, and all of us totally enjoyed the day out.

RCD Joined 13th Annual Learning and the Brain Conference
On April 14, 2012, Tom and Ella from the RCD set up a display at MacNeill Secondary School in Richmond for the 13th Annual Learning and the Brain Conference.
Over thirteen years ago a number of Richmond educators organized a series of workshops to help parents, guardians and educators to understand how children learn. The conference was originally designed to help kindergarten parents understand how young children learn. Over the years the conference has changed to include how we all learn at different stages in our lives. The sessions cover topics for all age groups - from preschoolers to young adults.
The event was organized by the Richmond School District and Richmond District Parents Association, in collaboration with the City of Richmond, Richmond Chinese Parents' Association and S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
There were a number of workshops and many parents enjoyed a morning of resourceful and interactive learning opportunities, as well as getting community info and resources from more than 10 social service providers. Ms. Grace Tsang, School Trustee of Richmond School Board, also visited the RCD display table.

May 2010 Liao Zhi and her dance company visited the RCD and we received them with a fabulous lunch sponsored by the RCD Chinese Support Group. On Oct 21, 2011 we are very happy to see Liao Zhi again, this time she returned to Canada to promote a disability movement for international awareness, and she visited the centre, accompanied by Chak-Kwong Au from the Vancouver coastal Health. Dr. Randy Galloway from Texas always accompanied Liao Zhi on her visit. It was great joy to see how good Liao Zhi is doing and her drive to promote dancing for people with disabilities continues. She informs us that she is in ballroom dancing now, and we wish her all the success in her future endeavours. We hope to see her again next year.

The October 15 gala night started with exuberance when guests came into the “Western World” in Richmond. There was Western Deco all around you, for instance cowhide balloons, backdrop on the stage with desert view, balloons everywhere showing cowboy boots, steer heads and more. The most fascinating of all was the way many guests were dressing up – cowboy hats, guns, jeans with boots and bandana. The spirit was high when old friends and new friends all gather together for a meaningful cause.

At around 7:15pm, our master of ceremony Dina officially started the event. We had RCD Board Chair Vince Miele welcome all the guests, followed by welcome remarks from Mr. John Yap MLA of Richmond-Steveston and Mayor Malcolm Bordie of the City of Richmond. Then there was cheque presentation from the Vancouver Airport Authority to the RCD, followed by plaque recognition from the RCD to our gala sponsors.

Buffet dinner started at 7:30pm, and we had wonderful review of the Western Country Buffet. Some guests indeed said that they thoroughly enjoyed the food, and it was one of the best menus and quality dishes they had ever tasted at similar events. We thank the Executive Airport Hotel, their banquet team and spectacular chef team for their good service and excellent food.

After dinner the entertainment started with a performance of line dance by Liz Salikin and Group, and guests started to join in when Liz taught the crowd some simple steps for line dancing. At about 9 p.m. the Five-and-a-half Cowboy Band began their performance and brought to the guests true western and blue grass music. Raffle prize draw, silent auction announcement and 50-50 draw at slightly after 10 p.m. brought the night to its end. Most guests told us that they had fun and we hope that more people will support our fundraising event next year, for a great cause, good food and lots of fun!

The night was enjoyable and very well attended. We had over 70 guests joining us, and everyone enjoyed the all-you-can-eat pasta and salad. The food was simple yet tasty; especially the salad received much compliments and attention. It was also nice to have the pasta keep coming; we believe most of the guests enjoyed 2 to 3 helpings at the pasta buffet.
We want to thank everyone who showed up to support us and bought the 50-50 tickets to raise fund for the Bonspiel. Also with special thanks to Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Mrs. Brodie from the City of Richmond, members of the Canadian Boccia Team led to the event by Paul Gauthier, Bessie and Bob from Richmond Kiwanis Club, Kim Kendrick from “Nurse Next Door”, Chris Wright and friends from Neil Squire Society and Ravinder for inviting friends from Steveston Residence to come.
We were also excited to see Shawn Logan, who since retired from the RCD Board has less frequented the Centre. It was a delight to see how well he looked. Finally thank you to members and supporters of the RCD, you help to make a huge difference to our community.

Richmond Chinatown Lions Club donated to RCD Summer Camp
On June 11, RCD Board Chair Vince Miele and Executive Director Ella Huang attended the annual installation meeting and dinner of the Richmond Chinatown Lions Club. They also received from the Lions Club a donation of $1,000 for the RCD Summer Camp for children and youth with special needs.
Their valued financial contribution enables the RCD to offer an affordable summer camp to children who will learn new skills and enjoy summer time with peers; thereby they can return to school with much easier transition.
Their generosity does make a difference in the delivery of much-coveted services to people with disabilities and the community. The work being undertaken through the RCD is only possible because of caring people like them.
Thank you for the valued support.

We had the opportunity to go on board the “Lady Washington”, a 112 foot tall ship from Washington state, USA. The Lady Washington was the first ship to go through Cap Horne with an American flag on it. The crew took the time to show us around: we had the chance to see the pantry, the officer deck and to learn more about the ship itself.
It was an amazing day and everybody had a lot of fun!!

A group of Korean Delegation, including social worker and representatives from Korean disability agencies, visited the RCD on April 4, 2011. We gave a presentation of the centre, and the Government services available for people with disabilities. They were enthusiastic with questions and we had a very fruitful discussion on the similarities and differences of our government system and policy.

The volunteers got a chance to meet one another during this session. Team building activities were introduced to promote effective teamwork and to boost their confidence in supporting people with disabilities. I look forward to work with each and every one of the volunteers of RCD. It is a very rewarding experience to see the development of each volunteer throughout the year.
